Chapter 18 – Arthur

The police cars didn’t pay Arthur’s cab any attention as they passed him and skidded to a halt in front of Juliet’s guard house.

‘We cut that fine,’ Tina said.

‘Not at all,’ Chloe said. ‘We had plenty time to spare.’

Arthur was alarmed. What on earth had the women done? His foreboding returned. Unconsciously, he slowed the cab to a halt. He’d half a mind to turn it around and hand the women over to the police. Whatever was going on, they were a part of it, weren’t they?

He glanced in his mirror. Juliet had been cuffed and was being forced into the rear of a car by two officers. Arthur gulped. No cops! Taylor’s words shouted in his brain. No cops!

‘Don’t worry about that guard,’ one of his passengers said. ‘She’s a resilient one who hasn’t done anything wrong.’

‘Oh…’ was all he mustered as a response.

‘Just get driving, Arthur,’ Chloe said.

‘Huh?’

‘Get us back on the road. You don’t want the cops stopping to ask why you are here. We’re only passing by, after all.’

‘We’re only passing…’ These women were up to their necks in some serious stuff, there was no getting away from it. It didn’t matter how much cooing and giggling they might do between their meetings, or how frivolous they made themselves, it was obvious they were up to no good. Arthur was certain of it. Worse, he was powerless to prevent himself from getting entangled in whatever scam it was they were trying to pull. As he accelerated towards the city, the gates to Erica Barnes’s home swung open and the police cars drove through, speeding towards her mansion.
